BREAST LIFT

  • What is a Breast Lift?

In a breast lift (also known as mastopexy), droopy breasts are given a lift to improve the nipple position as well as improve the shape of the breast. It is often done in combination with nipple reduction or areolar reduction to improve the aesthetics of the breast. Breast volume can also be augmented at the same time, this is known as an augmentation mastopexy.

There are many ways to perform a breast lift. The goal of all the procedures is to lift the nipple to the desired height and reshape the breast into a more aesthetic form.

In some patients, this goal can be achieved with augmentation using breast implants alone.

More commonly, incisions are needed around the nipple to lift it up to the desired height.

If you have a lot of excess skin, incisions may be needed on the breast to remove the excess skin.

  • Ideal Candidate

You would benefit from a breast lift if you have lost volume or tissue support due to weight loss, breastfeeding or ageing. Your nipples may be lower than you would like and your breasts may lack volume in the upper pole, if this is the case, you can consider a breast lift.

A simple test would be to put a pencil under your breast. If the pencil stays there after you have let go of your breast then you may benefit from a breast lift.

  • Will my scars be visible?

Surgical incisions are strategically hidden under the breasts or around the areolar. These scars will only be visible if someone has a very close look. You may need an incision extending down from the areola and under the breast if excess skin needs to be removed.

  • How long is the recovery?

Any bruising and swelling will take about 2 weeks to resolve, but you can return to work as early as the next day. Depending on the technique used, drains may be placed to remove excess fluid. Drains can be removed in about 2 to 3 days after surgery.

  • Will I lose any sensation in my nipples or breasts?

While the risk is low, there is a risk of permanent loss of nipple or breast sensation.

  • Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast lift?

It depends on the technique used to accomplish the lift. If breastfeeding is important to you, we will discuss the best options for you.

  • My breasts are not the same, will my breasts be balanced after the surgery?

Nobody has perfectly symmetrical breasts, we will do our best to restore symmetry to your breasts.

  • Can I see what my breasts will look like after surgery?

A computer simulation of the surgery can be done for you to give you an idea of the possible result after surgery.

  • When will I see the final results of my surgery?

Immediately after the surgery your breasts will be swollen and lifted. Over the following months the swelling will resolve and your breast tissue will settle down with gravity. The final results will only be seen about 12 months after the surgery.

*Disclaimer: Results vary according to individual.
