LIPOSUCTION

  • What is Liposuction, and what is it not?

Liposuction is common procedure – about a dozen people undergo liposuction in Singapore daily. It is a technique used in plastic surgery for the removal of excess fat under the skin by suction. A powerful, high-pressure vacuum is applied to a hollow instrument, known as a cannula, which enables the fat to be removed.

Liposuction is an aesthetic procedure, which aims to tackle problem areas that are not responding to diet and exercise to effect a change and enhance the contours of the body. It is not a weight-loss method and certainly not a treatment for obesity.

  • How is Liposuction performed?

Liposuction is usually performed under general anaesthesia in a clean operating room in an Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC) or a hospital for reasons of patient comfort and safety, as required by Ministry of Health, Singapore. Occasionally, small volumes of liposuction can be performed in approved medical clinics or as an adjunctive procedure to fat grafting. This is limited to less than 100 mls of aspiration per session.

  • What areas can be targeted with Liposuction?

Under the Chin and Neck. For men and women who have aged, there is accumulation of fat under the chin and jawline, causing a heavy-set appearance despite the fact that they may not have gained much weight. Liposuction can be used to target this area and this can help patients to look younger.

Arm Liposuction. Liposuction is ideal for removing the stubborn fat in the under arm or back of the arm area for women who struggle with far deposit in these areas. This can also be combined with another difficult area, which is the axillary area. Many patients who had previously been fearful of wearing sleeveless clothing or raising their arms report an increase in self-confidence after the procedure.

Abdomen and Flank Liposuction. The abdomen is the most common area for liposuction treatment. Following, weight loss, this area can be a stubborn area for both men and women. Liposuction in this area can help them to achieve a more proportionate body contour. This is especially so for women who are unable to lose the excess fat around their waist after childbirth. Liposuction is a highly effective tool in a mummy makeover – to restore the pre-baby body to these women.

Thigh Liposuction. The thighs are a troublesome area for most women despite diet and exercise as fats tend to settle in this area. Liposuction can be performed both on the inner and outer thighs to create a slimmer profile and better body shape.

Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia or male breasts can be a great deal of embarrassment to most men. Liposuction can be performed to treat gynecomastia hence avoiding obvious scars. Please see Gynecomastia for more information.

  • Who are good candidates for Liposuction?

The ideal candidate would be a person with a stable body weight but would like to remove undesirable deposits of body fat in specific areas of the body e.g. love handles. Liposuction is ideal for patients who have fat deposits that are stubborn and do not respond to diet or exercise.

  • What can Liposuction not do?

Liposuction does not tighten loose skin and it cannot help individuals who want to remove sagging skin. Liposuction can however, be combined with procedures such as arm lift or thigh lift, which addresses the loose skin during body contouring procedures. Liposuction is ideal for stubborn fat deposit in fit individuals who want to achieve an enhanced body contour. Whilst liposuction can permanently remove fat from the body, it is unable to prevent future weight gain. It is possible to out-eat your liposuction result. Liposuction does not give u a license to eat whatever you want. The only way to maintain the results is to adopt a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet and have a good sleep pattern.

  • What to expect? How many sessions are needed?

Liposuction can usually achieve excellent results after a single treatment, when performed on an appropriate patient (who is close to or at the ideal body weight), by an experience surgeon. This is in contrast to the numerous non-invasive body contouring procedures, which require several treatments, and their results tend to be modest.

  • Is Liposuction painful?

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia or sedation. So whilst you are having the procedure, there will be no pain. The post-operation pain varies considerably from person to person. Most people report feelings of a giant bruise in the treatment areas or soreness from a strenuous workout. Oral painkillers such as panadol or arcoxia should be sufficient to control the pain.

  • Risks of Liposuction

Whilst liposuction is largely a safe procedure, it has to be done by a well-trained doctor in the right facility with adequate monitoring. Severe complications have arisen from liposuction performed in suboptimal facilities without proper anaesthesia support. Nonetheless, like all surgical procedures, there are risks associated with liposuction. The common complications include bruising, swelling, numbness, asymmetry and scars. Whilst, liposuction aims to correct most of the contour irregularities in one session, follow-up surgery may be needed. More serious complications, which are rare but deserve mention due to its severity, include pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, fat embolism, and skin necrosis and excess fluid loss leading to shock.
