Labiaplasty is a plastic surgical procedure that reduces the labia minora and the labia majora, the skin folds surrounding the vulva, to relieve symptoms women experience from twisting and tugging of the labia. The size, shape and colour of the labia can change significantly with aging or as a result of childbirth. Labiaplasty is done for both functional improvement and also for aesthetic reasons. Labiaplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, as a single operation or in conjunction with other operations. 

Labiaplasty is done to reduce the labia minora so that they don’t hang below the hair-bearing labia majora. This is done to reduce asymmetry when one is longer than the other, or more commonly, to reduce the length so that it doesn’t twist, tug or fall out of a bathing suit.

Labiaplasty is a day procedure with minimal post-operative pain. You can be discharged the next day. The reduced labia tends to be swollen for a few days. You will be advised not to use tampons, wear tight underclothing and to abstain from sexual intercourse for 4 weeks after the surgery.

The complications of Labiaplasty are uncommon but occasional complications do occur. The risks of Labiaplasty include permanent scarring, infections, bleeding, irritation, and nerve damage leading to increased or decreased sensitivity. Labia reduction surgery is relatively contraindicated if you have active infection of active gynaecological diseases.
