Otoplasty involves shaping and securing the cartilage of your ear to improve the shape or reduce the prominence of your ear.

It is a minor surgical procedure that is done under local anaesthesia as a day surgery procedure. During the procedure your ear cartilage will be molded to the desired shape and secured with sutures.

If you feel insecure about the shape of your ears you may be a candidate for Otoplasty.  Common reasons why patients want this done are prominent ears (ears that stick out too much) or ears that are misshapen.

If you are considering this procedure for your child, they should be at least 6 years old before doing the surgery. This is because before this age your child’s ear is still growing. By 6 years of age, the ear has grown to about 90% of it’s adult size.

This procedure can be done under local anaesthesia, so you can be awake. General anaesthesia (patient is asleep) would be needed if the patient is very young and unable to cooperate during the procedure.

Yes, this is done as a day surgery procedure. You can go home the same day.

It’s best to wait until at least 6 years of age before doing this procedure. If the surgery is done before this, the growth of the ears may be affected.

Some children will suffer teasing at school due to prominent ears. The benefit of doing the surgery at a young age is to avoid the psychological stress during school-going years.

The surgery is done on the external ear, this does not affect the hearing portion of your inner ear. Your hearing will not get better or worse after the surgery.
